Sitka Landmarks

St. Michael's Cathedral
240 Lincoln Street, Sitka, AK 99835

This is a notable landmark and popular tourist destination.

In 1848, in the capital of Russian Alaska, Sitka, then known as
Novoarkhangelsk, was built.  It was the center of the Eastern Orthodox power base in the land of Alaska.

During the 1960's the Cathedral caught on fire and burned to the ground.   Local citizens formed chains and passed the majority of the artifacts from the burning building.   In the 1970's the church was rebuilt, exactingly to the original design.

The dramatic architecture dominates the center of the town, over 150 years since its original construction.
